Dendron Historical Society

Dendron Historical Society Information

The Dendron Historical Society was formed in July of 1997 to collect, preserve and display articles, pictures, maps, artifacts and other items that relate to the history of the Town of Dendron; Surry Lumber Company and the Surry, Sussex and Southampton Railroad. The first and most immediate project of the Society is the restoration of a Boxcar that was used by the Surry Lumber Company on the Surry, Sussex and Southampton Railroad.

The Dendron Historical Society was meeting on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 PM in the Town of Dendron Municipal Building, located on Rolfe Highway, Dendron, Virginia.

Membership in the Dendron Historical Society is open to anyone having an interest in Dendron and its history. Membership dues are $10.00 per year. Payment of dues will entitle the member to the Society's quarterly newsletter.

The Town of Dendron allows the Society to meet at the Town Municipal Building, thus we do not have a phone number. The phone number for the Town of Dendron is (757) 267-2508. They have an answering machine on the line and will pass on messages to the Historical Society.

Thomas Huber conducts the program at this Historical Society Meeting. Thomas has been giving his famous quizzes about things that have happened in the Town over the past decades for some time. They have made the long time residents wonder if they really lived here, and those of us who are newer to the Town just scratch our heads. Those of you who are not able to attend the meetings are truly missing a treat. A couple of his quizzes have made it into the quarterly newsletter, so you may still have a chance to enjoy them even if you can not attend the meetings. Also pictured above are: Thurman Williams, Audrey (Bishop) Williams, Lena (Barlow) Bish and in the back is Roy Warner. (This picture was taken at the August 1999 meeting.)

Brick Project

The Dendron Historical Society is building a museum to display photographs, articles, items and anything else that has to do with the Town of Dendron and why it is here. As a part of that effort the Society is installing a 40 feet by 4 feet brick sidewalk leading to the main entrance of the museum building. We are selling bricks for a donation of $100 that you can have someone’s name engraved on and forever displayed in the Town. You are limited to 13 letters or spaces per line and up to three lines per brick. The letters will be epoxy filled so the name will stand out.

We ask that if you want to remember or honor someone with a brick that you also send a biographical sketch of that person. The sketches will be available in the museum so if some one wants to know about the person on the brick there will be information available to tell who the are and why their name is there.

See Merchandise links below to order Commemorative Bricks or other Merchandise.
