Box Car Project - 2001

The end sills and side sills have been replaced. The side sills have been coated with several coats of Thompson’s Waterseal. The sills are exposed to the elements and we are fearful that the pine sills will rot if not protected.

New needle beams (these fit perpendicular to sills and under the door posts) with notches cut and about to have holes drilled to fasten the queen posts to the beam.

The needle beam with outside queen posts being test fit into place.

Three of the interior sills between the doors in the center of the boxcar have rot damage that must be repaired. There is enough good wood remaining so that none of the four have to be replaced.

Two sills partially repaired. The one in the foreground was the most damaged. (Sill #2). Used a combination of wood scraps, Minwax wood filler and auto body filler.

Sill #2 being built up.

More work on sill #2. Bolts for the needle beams had to be placed in position and filled around to create new bolt holes.

Preparing to install needle beams.

Needle beams in place with truss rods running through the queen posts.
